Muay Thai is truly a fascinating martial art with many layers to it.
Originating from Thailand, Muay Thai is also known as the “art of eight limbs” or “science of eight limbs” – for its use of two punches, kicks, elbows, and knees, along with clinching techniques. It is a stand-up combat sport/martial art with deep cultural roots, but has evolved into a globally popular form of exercise, self-defence, and competition. Training emphasises discipline and conditioning. It can be physically demanding and improves cardiovascular endurance, strength, flexibility, and agility. Muay Thai can be a magnificent journey with numerous benefits…..
Muay Thai training for adults is a great way to get fit in a fun and exciting environment. Adults classes are for students aged over the age of 14. Any level will benefit from our classes.

Unlike other traditional martial arts, Muay Thai students wear shorts as that allows for better movement of knee and kicking techniques. The shorts often feature bold colours, traditional Thai script, and symbolic artwork, allowing students to express their personal style while showing respect for the sport’s roots.
With its cultural roots, Muay Thai fights are accompanied by ethnic Thai music while fighters can be seen donning unique headwear called Mongkhon and armbands known as Pra Jiads. The mongkon is perceived by Thai people to possess special powers of protection and good luck on its wearer. Mongkhons are worn just prior to entering the ring and during the Wai Khru, Ram Muay dance prior to the fight. It is a way of showing respect to others i.e coach, family and gym. This is seen in Muay Thai fights all over Thailand but has also transported beyond the borders to around the world wherever Muay Thai is practised.
Like the Mongkhon, Pra Jiads are believed to grant good luck to the wearers with origins tied to the ancient times when the country was constantly at war. Worn on one or both arms, they are now made with fabric, rope or a combination of both materials. As the sport of Muay Thai is spread outside of Thailand, the armbands are incorporated in some foreign gyms as a kind of belt system similar to that in Karate or Taekwondo. Such ranking systems, however, do not exist in traditional Muay Thai camps. Both Mongkhons and Pra Jiads are looked upon as sacred objects and should be treated with respect at all times. They are handled with care and must never be dropped, stepped on or over. The traditions of Muay Thai are what make the sport distinctive and special – it is truly one of the most enchanting combat arts in the world.

Patriot Gym is here to help your child develop a healthy and sustainable approach to improving their health and fitness for today and tomorrow.
How quickly they will progress in learning Muay Thai depends mainly on them. How much time they commit to training. How coachable they are, and how well they listen to their coach. Some kids train three times a week plus practicing everyday so there’s constant progression, whereas others will only practice during our two sessions or even one session.. so the learning curve isn’t as steep! There is no right or wrong. Be patient. Results can take time, but they will happen.
When training, any negative/judgemental thinking must be kept away from Patriot Gym! Leave it in the past, outside the door, away from our classes.
Allowing people you don’t know well into your personal space (e.g holding onto each other in pairs work or as a team etc..) can be incredibly uncomfortable or even intimidating for many. This is a hurdle for some in mixed classes, as there has to be a level of comfort and trust that this touching and invasion of space will not be abused by partners. I totally imagine as this is a women’s only class, we should not have this dilemma.
